We arrived in Schluchsee on Thursday mid-afternoon, unpacked and then went for a walk around the town. We browsed through a couple of the shops, had a coffee then returned to the hotel for an early dinner.

On Friday we decided to visit Titisee, the weather although dull wasn’t bad. We thought that it would be a good day to take a boat ride. Titisee is quite a touristy place with the main street being full of souvenir shops but I still like it.

We took a boat ride on the lake, it wasn’t expensive at only €4, it lasted about 25 mins and the commentary was in German and English.

Since it was still pretty early in the morning we had a chance to browse the shops before the coach loads of daytrippers arrived.

After our trip to Titisee we jumped in the car and drove to Feldberg. We got the cable car to the top of the mountain, since it was a rather cloudy day we coudn’t see the alps but the view from the top was still pretty spectacular!

On Saturday morning we found out that my uncle had been up most of the night with a stomach bug, he was feeling pretty ill so decided to spend the day in bed recovering. We made sure he had everything he needed and then headed out for the day.

We headed off to Konstanz, it was only just over 1 hour from Schluchsee so it wasn’t far. We had only visited Konstanz once before at Easter with Stewart’s parents. The last time we saw Konstanz it was freezing cold and raining and now we wanted to see how it looked in the sunshine. We weren’t disappointed.

Germany were playing their next game so the streets of Konstanz were bustling. Once every hour the katamaran leaves the pier at Konstanz for for Friedrichshafen so we decided to pay a visit to the Zepplin museum there and have some lunch.

The katamaran ride was less than an hour and we sat on deck. The journey was pretty quiet and really smooth. The lake as dotted with sailboats, definately a brilliant way to spend a summer afternoon!

First port of call was the Zepplin museum.

Friedrichshafen was home to the Hindenburg, it was built there in March 4 1934, inside the Zepplin museum there is a full size replica of part of the airship. You can enter inside this replica to get some idea of the incredible feat of engineering involved in creating this marvellous airship.

After visiting the museum we picked a cafe on the lake front to sit down and have lunch. I think the name of the place was Alfonso’s or Alfreddo’s or something similar. Stewart ordered a Schweizer Wurst Salat which arrived promtly and was pretty tasty, I ordered an Alsacian Flammkuchen. I was getting worried when after about 10 minutes nothing had arrived. Stewart was almost finished his salad when my “Flammkuechen” came.

I’m sorry folks I should have photographed my lunch but I was so repulsed by it all I wanted to do was to get as much distance between it and me!
A Flammkuechin is supposed to be paper thin pastry, with a thin topping of creme fraiche, ham, onion and a sprinkling of cheese. What arrived was basically a pizza base, topped with some kind of thick cream, chunks of Black forest ham and a layer of lava hot cheese. It was absolutely vile and I was left with the most disgusting aftertaste.
We promptly paid the bill and hurried to catch the next katamaran back to Konstanz.

Konstanz was really busy and as we disembarked the katamaran from Freidrichshafen we saw a band with flutes.
The streets of Konstanz were full of proud Germany supporters looking forward to watching the game. The atmosphere was electric!!
We collected the car and headed back to Schluchsee. I noticed on the way back that my arms and nose were pretty red and sunburned.
On returning to the hotel we checked on my uncle who unfortunately wasn’t feeling any better.
After breakfast this morning we packed up the car and headed home. Hopefully by tomorrow my uncle will be feeling a little stronger for his journey home.
