I called this curry Chefs Special Curry since a Chefs Special is a common name for a dish concocted to use up leftovers. I had been itching to try out the Barbecue masala I wrote about yesterday so I thought a curry would be the perfect answer.
CHEFS SPECIAL CURRY – BEEF AND POTATO
Serves 2-3
INGREDIENTS
- 4-5 Cloves garlic
- 1 Fat fresh green chilli
- 100g White mushrooms, sliced
- 2 Small peppers, chopped
- 1 1/2″ Fresh ginger, peeled
- 2 Medium onions, diced
- 1 Sirloin steak, trimmed of fat and sliced
- 3 Small potatoes, diced
- 1 Tbsp oil
- 1 Bunch fresh coriander, chopped
- 1/2 Tsp Barbecue masala
- 1 1/2 Tsp Ground coriander
- 1/2 Tsp Salt
- 1/2 Tsp Turmeric
- 1 Tbsp Tomato puree
- 2 Medium tomatoes (I used my homegrown tomatoes!), chopped
- 1 Tsp Garam masala
PREPARATION
- Blitz the chilli, garlic and ginger in a small food processor until finely chopped.
- Heat the oil in a non stick pan and fry the garlic/chilli/ginger paste until fragrant, add the spices and continue to fry for a further minute.
- Add the sliced steak, tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, half the corriander, potatoes and pour over enough water to cover.
- Bring up to the boil then reduce the heat, allow to simmer for 30 minutes topping up with water when required.
- Add the rest of the chopped coriander and serve piping hot along with basmati rice.

I think tandoori masala would work almost as well or you could add spices which made it up, I listed them in the last post.
Let me know how it goes!

Pam, what a delicious looking curry! I love it that you added some potatoes in it. Bbq masala, huh? I’ll try and source it out! Sounds and looks absolutely lovely.
Hey, we can make it a curry week or month, if you like?

Sounds like a great idea but this is my fourth curry recipe of the month so I think unofficially August was curry month for me.

You should all go to my mothers house. I grew up on curry lol.
The ingredients of the masala include asafoetida. What is that? I’ve never heard of that before.

kj – check out this link for details of asafoetida

Raw the powder smells awful but once cooked it adds great flavour to dishes and also acts as an antiflatulent.

Seeing your Indian style dishes makes me crave going home. I can’t wait to go back to The Bombay, a restaurant with food fit for kings. France is fine but I’m kinda tired of all the meats potatoes sauces and cheese my in-laws favor.

Nerissa, when you are there tell them to rename the restaurant Mumbai. They’ll get more kudos
Pam, thanks for the link, i’ll check it out.
