Now That’s What I Call A Sandwich- My Ultimate Steak Sandwich

I love the bread in France and the bakery in the local supermarket in St.Louis bakes the most wonderful baguettes which they call flutes, they make the most amazing sandwiches!

I haven’t eaten red meat in a couple of weeks and when I saw the entrecotes in the butchers I knew immediately what I wanted for dinner tonight, the Ultimate Steak Sandwich.  So here it is..

MY ULTIMATE STEAK SANDWICH

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Sirloin steak, aged well
  • 1 1/2 Medium onions, sliced
  • Handful of white mushrooms, sliced
  • 4″ Section of white French flute/baguette
  • 1 Tbsp Low fat mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp Creamed Horseradish
  • 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 Tbsp oil
  • Salt & Pepper

PREPARATION

  1. Remove the steak from the fridge about 1 hour before cooking to allow it to reach room temperature.
  2. Pre-heat the grillpan.
  3. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan, add the onions and cook gently until starting to become golden (about 10-15 minutes) then add the sliced mushrooms.

Place the steak on the grillpan, cook on one side for 3 minutes(longer if you don’t like your meat medium rare) then turn and remove grillpan from the heat.  Allow the steak to stand for about 5 minutes before slicing.

  1. Mix the mayonnaise and horseradish, open the baguette and spread liberally over the bottom of the loaf.  Spread the dijon mustard over the top layer of the bread.
  2. The mushrooms and onions should now be ready, spoon them over the top layer of the bread and season to taste.
  3. Slice the steak and arrange over the bottom slice of bread and season.
  4. Place the lid on the sandwich and eat immediately.  Enjoy!

  1. That looks delicious! I may have to try to make this someday!

When I was younger, my mom used to take me to this shop to get BBQ beef sandwiches, but they closed down. I wish I could get their recipe- it was to die for!

  2. Wow, that’s what I call a fabulous sandwich! Bread, meat and onions, there’s no better combination! I could just eat one of those now…

  3. Thanks all, you can’t really beat a good sandwich!

I had another of my favourites for lunch today, grated cheddar cheese and chopped onion – it was delicious!

  4. mmm, every where I go on holiday I always make sure I have a sample of the local steak as I love my steak and that looks very tasty.

  5. that looks like a scrumptious sandwich – by the way, the onions and mushrooms mix look pretty good on its own, might just skip the steak and have an onion sandwich :-)
