Vegetarian Week : Day Three – So Far So Good

As I said in my post on Monday, Sara at I Like to Cook has decided to spend a whole week abstaining from eating meat and after my veg stir fry on Monday I decided to give it a try and join in with the fun.

I will not be abstaining from fish, eggs or diary, only meat.

So here is day three, my evening meals on Monday and Tuesday were not very gourmet but really comforting – Fish Fingers, Oven Chips and Baked Beans.  I haven’t eaten fish fingers in ages and when we were shopping on Monday I saw them in the supermarket and knew that I needed a fix!

Yesterday afternoon I went to Freiburg in Germany with my friend Kate and her sister to do some shopping.  We wandered around the market at Münsterplatz and in and out of a few shops and then stopped at the Goldener Engel for some lunch.

We all decided to have Flammkuechen (a traditional Alsacian dish simiar to a pizza but with sour cream instead of tomatoes and with a wafer thin base). Francis had a Klassiker which consisted of cour cream, onions, bacon lardons and cheese whilst Kate and I both opted to stink the car out on the way home by having sour cream, leek, onion and garlic.  Really yummy!

After lunch we hit the shops for a few hours and then I drove back to Basel.  By the time I had dropped off Kate and Francis and got home it was almost 7pm and I was really tired, I didn’t have the energy or motivation to cook anything fancy so I opted for the easy option and had some more fish fingers, they were really good!!

I bought some tofu the other day so I think I will get some egg noodles and make a stir fry tonight or perhaps a mushroom curry.  You’ll need to wait and see what I decide later!

  1. i have to check if i might be a vegetarian in the closet! now that i am thinking of it … i don’t eat meat very often at all and i am very picky when it comes to what kind of meat i choose.

i have never liked the taste of lamb for example. when my mother would cook it (about once a year, maximum) i would always refuse to eat – even the smell makes me sick! yak!

i also don’t really like beef. only if i have enough vegetables or side dishes i can force myself to eat a few bites. beef is actually not that bad if it’s perfectly seasoned.

and since we mostly had pork when i was growing up i now am sick of this kind of meat too …

oh my gosh, i am a totally spoilt meat eater!

if i cook meat myself – about once in two weeks – it’s always fillets of either turkey or chicken. or i eat fish (i don’t understand so called “vegetarians” who still eat fish … do they grow on trees or what?!?) …

if i scan my qick bites for traces of animal flesh it would be a totally different story of course. i can not resist the odd “schinkenstangerl”(puff pastry with little pieces of ham) every once in a while or really delicious bacon on some sunday mornings …

yeah. i am a carnivore after all …

  2. Gerda – My husband is exactly like you, he eats beef once in a while but HATES lamb, doesn’t like most fish (will eat salmon), doesn’t like pork so survives on chicken and turkey and the odd ham sandwich.

I on the other hand LOVE meat of most descriptions.

As you can see from most of my recipes I mostly cook with turkey or chicken but I do really like pulses and grains (much to Stewarts displeasure).

Since I’m trying to loose weight I thought cutting out the meat this week would help and also encourage me to try and eat more fish.

    We’ll see….

  3. Hey Pam, Thanks for the comment on my blog. I just read your post on Vegetarian Week and it made me smile. Thats because according to the Hindu calender it is the Auspicious month of Shravan right now in which I do not eat meat of any kind for the entire month. Some people will even abstain from eating eggs. Its a kind of self control exercise for me more than anything religious. And actully its quite easy because i am not a hardcore non-vegetarian

  4. Hi Anupama,

I have just read your post on Shravan, I love to hear about other cultures and this sounds like a wonderful tradition!

    Thank you for sharing it!

  5. Pam I find it very difficult to abstain from eating meat/fish for a whole week. But I know its very good for our body to stop eating them for a while,it cleanses and rejuvenates our system!

  6. Good on you! I don’t know if I could give up eating meat for a week. Especially all those lovely italian sausages! But I think I am gonna watch you for a while and see how it goes. maybe give it a shot myself.

  7. P.S. I love lamb. I think it’s the way it’s cooked. I remember growing up as a child and even today, many people I know didn’t like spinach but I always liked it, but it’s because of the way my mom used to prepare it in a very savory way that I never tasted anywhere else. ;-)

    Paz
