It’s that time again! Meeta over at What’s For Lunch Honey is hosting another round of her Monthly Mingle, with Valentine’s Day on the way the theme is - Sweet Love!
What a great chance to indulge my sweet tooth and make something very special. I don’t do much baking and so this recipe is the perfect solution for me. Apple Crumble is a classic recipe and it was one of my childhood favourites. When I was young Sunday afternoons were often spent in my grandmothers kitchen watching her and my mother making the traditional Sunday lunch and usually a dessert of some form. I really looked forward to those Sundays when it was apple or rhubarb crumble, the combination of tart fruit and the crunchy topping with a side of creamy custard was heaven!
So here is another family recipe I would like to share with you and I have submitted this to Meeta for inclusion in her Monthly Mingle #7 round-up. I really hope you like it!

APPLE CRUMBLE
INGREDIENTS
For the crumble topping
- 150g Plain flour with a pinch of salt
- 80g Brown sugar
- 100g Butter, cold and cubed
- Pinch of Cinnamon
For the fruit filling
- 2 Large Grannie Smith apples, peeled, cored and cubed
- 25g Brown sugar
- 2 Heaped tbsp Raisins soaked in hot water (or booze of your choice, to allow the raisins to become plump)
- 1 Heaped tsp flour
- 1 Pinch cinnamon
PREPARATION
- Add the sugar, flour and cinnamon into a bowl and mix well.
- Rub the cubes of butter into the flour mixture until it resembles breadcrumbs.
- Add the apples, raisins, flour, cinnamon and sugar into a bowl and mix well.
- Pre-heat the oven to 180°C.
- Place the apples into a shallow dish and sprinkle over the crumble mixture.
- Bake the crumble in the oven for 40-45 minutes until the crumble is golden and the fruit is bubbling and cooked through.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream, cream or thick custard.
- Eat and Enjoy!!

Meeta - I was really happy to have time to be able to make this and submit it for your Mingle as I said to you in my mail things have been pretty full on lately.
Nicole - Thanks! My site really needed a change and I’m pretty happy with how it looks for the moment anyhow
Mae & Sara - I much prefer the lightness of apple crumble to apple pie, leaves more room for that extra helping!!
Cooking Chat - I don’t think I’ll have time to submit a post for this round of Leftover Tuesdays but I’m a great fan of making something out of nothing so to speak so I’ll definitely be taking part in future.

The apple crumble is delicious, much better than the apple pie or apple strudle. What I have missed is the recipe for the custard since I prefer to make it myself.
