Review - The Sisters - Kelvingrove Glasgow

The Sisters Kelvingrove

The Sisters restaurants are two restaurants (one at Kelvingrove in the West End of Glasgow and the other at Jordanhill in Glasgow) run unsurprisingly by two sisters named Jacqueline and Pauline. The two sisters pride themselves in naming proudly all of their suppliers from Mark the fishman who lands the scallops and langoustines in Ullapool racing them to Glasgow to Angus McLeod who supplies only the best fruit and vegetables. Jacqueline and Pauline “provide a real taste of Scotland in the middle of Glasgow”.

Nat, Gareth, Stewart and I decided to book a table for the pre-theatre menu at the Kelvingrove restaurant, competitively priced at £14.95 for 2 courses or £16.95 for 3 courses. Stewart and I had eaten at this branch back in September during our last visit to Glasgow when we decided to show our friend Manfred what real Scottish food was all about and really enjoyed our meal so our hopes were high, we weren’t to be disappointed. I hope I have the menu correct as it was slightly different from that given online and I am recalling it from memory.

It took us ages to decide what we were having and finally we chose our starters and mains - Natalie chose the mussels and then the steak, Stewart chose the white and black pudding followed by the chicken, Gareth chose the haggis then the venison and I opted for the fishcake followed by the steak.

The starters arrived, beautifully presented, my fishcake was light, crisp and delicious and I could have quite happily eaten two of these tasty treats as a main course. Stewart really enjoyed the black and white pudding, he had never eaten white pudding and said that he actually preferred it to the more conventional black pudding, the onion sauce complimented the spiced puddings well. Gareth liked the haggis alot and Natalie agreed that it was really good after trying a little. Natalie was enjoying her own starter until the last mouthful when she got a gritty mussel which spoiled it a little for her, she also said that she would have preferred the sauce to be a little thinner as it was quite soupy in consistency but that this was more a matter of personal preference.

On to the mains which were served with a side order of boiled new potatoes, carrots and broccoli.

Since I’m pregnant I need to eat meat cooked through and not my usual rare-medium (at least in the case of steak), sometimes this leaves meat tough but this was certainly not the case here, the Scottish beef was tender and full of flavour. The chicken and haggis was really matched perfectly and Gareth really enjoyed his venison which was cooked to perfection. The portion sizes of the starters and main courses was really well judged and still left us with a room for a dessert.

Natalie chose the sweetest offering on the menu - the puff candy meringue with honeycomb ice cream & hot butterscotch sauce, she said that it was far and away the sweetest thing she has ever eaten and although she was really glad she had ordered it she didn’t think she would choose it again. I chose the crumble which was definately one of the best I have ever eaten, the creamy custard was to die for. The boys chose a cheese selection each.

To accompany the meal the others chose a bottle of house Merlot and I ordered a bottle of sparkling mineral water, we also had a tea, a cappuccino and two further glasses of house Merlot, the bill came to about £95. Definately worth every penny!!! If you live there or are just visiting Glasgow I highly recommend a visit to The Sisters, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
