A Review - Noohn, Basel

Stewart and I haven’t been out since we got back from Glasgow at Christmas. Every weekend we’ve been working in the house preparing the nursery and clearing the loft etc so by the time the evening arrived we were both knackered and in no mood to go out. This weekend however we took things much easier and I really wanted to take advantage of this by having a night out.

A few months ago my friend Kate and I came across this relatively new restaurant/bar in Basel called Noohn when we popped in for drinks after work one Friday night. I really liked the ambience and when I saw the Euro/Asian menu I knew that I wanted to try it.

Noohn is really pretty huge inside with 200 seats in 600m2. The dining area is comprised of a seated area, self service area, a roof terrace (only open in the summer) and a sushi bar. The restaurant is non-smoking although smoking is permitted in the bar.

The whole place seemed to be quite child friendly and there were a number of families with kids eating there last night.

I should have taken pictures last night but it wasn’t until this morning that I decided to write a review.

The menu was pretty varied and the kitchen is open plan so you can watch as your meal is prepared. As a starter Stewart had a salad of lambs lettuce with crispy bacon and pine nuts and I had chicken satay. For our main courses I chose the Angus beef with Szechuan sauce and coconut polenta and Stewart opted for the Terriyaki corn fed chicken breast on a bed of leeks with jasmin rice. I ordered my steak as well done (one of the downsides to pregnancy is not being permitted to ordering a medium rare steak) and was a little nervous as to whether this would actually happen or not. I need not have worried, as it arrived perfectly cooked and still wonderfully tender and juicy. Stewart’s terriyaki was also absolutely delicious.

I thought the portion sizes were well judged, had it not been for my diabetes the I would definitely have ordered a dessert as they looked and sounded incredible!

Our bill came to 108CHF and included 2 x 0.5 Litre bottles of mineral water and 3 bottles of Sapporo (Japanese beer).

We both really enjoyed our meal. Wefound the service to be courteous, fast, friendly and the food was excellent.

I would definitely book in advance as all of the tables around us were reserved and although we booked for 7pm the restaurant was already very busy.

Review - The Sisters - Kelvingrove Glasgow

The Sisters Kelvingrove

The Sisters restaurants are two restaurants (one at Kelvingrove in the West End of Glasgow and the other at Jordanhill in Glasgow) run unsurprisingly by two sisters named Jacqueline and Pauline. The two sisters pride themselves in naming proudly all of their suppliers from Mark the fishman who lands the scallops and langoustines in Ullapool racing them to Glasgow to Angus McLeod who supplies only the best fruit and vegetables. Jacqueline and Pauline “provide a real taste of Scotland in the middle of Glasgow”.

Nat, Gareth, Stewart and I decided to book a table for the pre-theatre menu at the Kelvingrove restaurant, competitively priced at £14.95 for 2 courses or £16.95 for 3 courses. Stewart and I had eaten at this branch back in September during our last visit to Glasgow when we decided to show our friend Manfred what real Scottish food was all about and really enjoyed our meal so our hopes were high, we weren’t to be disappointed. I hope I have the menu correct as it was slightly different from that given online and I am recalling it from memory.

Cocktails at Strata

On Saturday we planned to meet Natalie and Gareth and dinner at Ichiban. We were a little early and so popped into Strata (bar and restaurant) on Queen Street for a pre-dinner cocktail.

Neither of us had ever been into Strata before, I liked it instantly! The decor was modern and light and I really liked the ambient music.

We grabbed a stool at the bar and had a look at the cocktail menu which was pretty extensive.

Victorian mojito

I chose a Victorian Mojito (£5.00) containing gin, mint, lime and apple juice.

rasberry mule

Stewart chose a Rasberry Mule (£5.95) which consisted of vodka, rasberries, lime juice and ginger beer and was served in a Collins glass.

Sorry about the quality of the photographs, they were taken with my phone.

The choice of food in Strata was great and there were three different menus to choose from : Continue Reading »

Hotel Abbey - Brussels

Just back from Brussels last night, what an exhausting couple of days! I’m still not at 100%, this virus seems to have really worn down my system, it’s taking me ages to recover.

I said I’m just back, there was a seafood convention being held at the same time as our conference so the organizers had no choice but to book us into two different hotels for the two nights.
The first hotel I stayed at was the Hotel Abbey. I always like to check out the hotels I will be staying at before I arrive so I have an idea of what to expect but I couldn’t find much information aside that on their website.

Here are what I thought: Continue Reading »

Lily’s Stomach Supply

Lily'sI went to Lily’s Stomach Supply for lunch with a friend today. Lily’s is definately one of my favourite restaurants in Basel (they also have a branch in Zürich).Sitting just beside Claraplatz in Kleinbasel it is really easy to find. If you like Pan-Asian food, a relaxed atmosphere and great service then Lily’s is definitely the place for you.

If I’m having lunch there I try and ensure that I arrive before noon otherwise there is little chance of getting a table immediately and you’ll almost definitely need to wait. The restaurant is always packed at both lunchtime and in the evening. Continue Reading »
